A wealthy young Mexican family move to a small village in the mountainous countryside. The film deconstructs the darkness – within them as individuals and a family, and the darkness lurking in the small community. A superb chaotic and poetic arthouse film which delves into dark corners of the conscious and subconscious, both of the characters and the viewer. A very interesting approach, both in technical terms, as well as in narrative.
Flashbacks and symbolic sequences add range to the emotions and thoughts that are communicated.
Masterclass direction from Mexican auteur Carlos Reygadas. A sublime implementation of atmosphere and stylization in cinema. Employs a non-professional cast of actors and draws inspiration from the director’s personal life, as well as expressionist painting and dreams. Winner of the Best Director award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, despite a very divided reception
